While the spear is the iconic symbol of the Spartan hoplite, their arsenal was far more diverse and effective than popular culture often suggests.

The Dory: The Backbone of the Spartan Phalanx

The dory, a long spear approximately 2.4 meters in length, formed the backbone of the Spartan fighting force. Its significant length provided a crucial advantage in close-quarters combat, allowing a Spartan to strike multiple enemies before they could even come within reach. The dory wasn't just a weapon; it was an extension of the warrior's body, requiring extensive training and skillful maneuverability. The weight and balance of the dory were meticulously considered, ensuring both power and control.
