Recipe For Dog Biscuits

Making your own dog biscuits is a rewarding experience. You control the ingredients, ensuring your furry friend gets only the best. This recipe is simple, healthy, and produces delicious treats your dog will adore.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour: Provides essential fiber and nutrients. You can substitute with oat flour or a blend for variety.
  • 1 cup rolled oats: Adds extra fiber and a slightly chewy texture.
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter (xylitol-free): A source of protein and a beloved flavor for many dogs. Crucially, ensure your peanut butter is completely xylitol-free, as xylitol is toxic to dogs.
  • 1 egg: Binds the ingredients and adds richness.
  • 1/2 cup water (or more, as needed): Adjusts the dough consistency.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder: Helps the biscuits rise slightly for a lighter texture.

Instructions:

  1. Preheat & Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, rolled oats, and baking powder. Mix well.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients: Add the peanut butter, egg, and water to the dry ingredients. Mix thoroughly until a dough forms. You may need to add a little more water if the dough is too dry.
  4. Roll & Cut: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut out your desired shapes.
  5. Bake: Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown.
  6. Cool & Store: Let the biscuits cool completely on a wire rack before serving to your dog. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze for longer storage.

Tips & Variations:

  • Add-ins: Feel free to experiment with adding other healthy ingredients, such as shredded carrots, sweet potato, or even a little cooked and finely chopped chicken.
  • Adjust Texture: For softer biscuits, reduce the baking time. For crispier biscuits, increase the baking time slightly.
  • Portion Control: Remember to offer these treats in moderation as part of a balanced diet.

This recipe provides a foundation for creating tasty and healthy homemade dog biscuits. Enjoy baking with your canine companion in mind! Remember always to supervise your dog while they are enjoying their treats.
