  • Melee: Clubs, daggers, darts, slings, spears, light crossbows. These are effective in close-quarters combat, but their damage potential is typically lower than that of martial weapons.

Martial Weapons

Martial weapons require more training and skill to use effectively. They generally deal higher damage and possess unique properties:

  • Melee: Battleaxes, flails, glaives, greatswords, halberds, lances, longswords, mauls, morningstars, rapiers, scimitars, short swords, sickles, trident, war picks, whips. The wide range caters to diverse combat styles.
  • Ranged: Heavy crossbows, longbows. These offer superior range and damage compared to simple ranged weapons, but require greater strength and skill.

Other Weapon Types

Beyond the simple and martial distinctions, other weapon types exist, adding complexity to the game:

  • Ammunition: Arrows, bolts. These are used with bows and crossbows, respectively.
  • Siege Weapons: These are powerful weapons used to attack fortifications, and are generally not used in standard combat encounters.

  • Reach: Weapons with reach allow attacks from a greater distance than usual, offering strategic advantages.

Choosing the Right Weapon: Strategy and Character Build

Weapon selection isn't arbitrary. It’s a strategic decision that directly reflects your character’s class, fighting style, and overall role within the party. A nimble rogue might prefer a rapier for its precision and versatility, while a powerful barbarian might opt for a great axe for maximum damage.

Understanding weapon properties and carefully considering your character's capabilities is key to success in the dungeons and beyond. The right weapon can be the difference between triumph and defeat.
