Sanrio's My Melody and Kuromi are undeniably iconic. Their contrasting personalities – My Melody's sweet innocence versus Kuromi's rebellious charm – have captivated fans for years. But what happens when you try to reinterpret these beloved characters in your own artistic style? It's a challenge that blends respect for the originals with the exciting freedom of personal expression.

Capturing the Essence

The first step in any character redesign is understanding the source material. My Melody's defining features are her signature red hood, floppy ears, and generally cheerful demeanor. Kuromi, on the other hand, is easily recognizable by her skull-shaped head bow, sharp teeth, and mischievous expression. These elements are non-negotiable; they are the foundation upon which any stylistic interpretation must be built.

My Approach

My approach involved simplifying the character designs while retaining their core identities. I opted for cleaner lines and less intricate details, focusing instead on conveying their distinct personalities through posture and expression. For My Melody, this meant a softer, gentler pose, highlighting her innocent nature. Kuromi, conversely, demanded a more dynamic, almost defiant stance to capture her rebellious spirit.
