Draconic Sorcerer 5e Homebrew

The Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer is a classic 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons subclass, but sometimes a little extra spice is needed. This homebrew aims to provide that, offering a compelling alternative while staying true to the spirit of the original. We're not reinventing the wheel, but rather adding some interesting spokes and a snazzier hubcap.

Revised Draconic Ancestry

Instead of simply gaining resistance to a single damage type, this revised Draconic Bloodline grants more versatility.

Level 1: Choose one of the following Draconic Ancestries: Red, Blue, Green, White, Black, Bronze, Brass, Copper, Gold, or Silver. Each ancestry provides a unique benefit, enhancing both combat and roleplaying capabilities.

  • Red: Fire damage resistance and a +1 bonus to Charisma checks to Intimidate.
  • Blue: Cold damage resistance and a +1 bonus to Charisma checks to Persuade.
  • Green: Poison damage resistance and a +1 bonus to Charisma checks to Deception.
  • White: Lightning damage resistance and a +1 bonus to Charisma checks to Insight.
  • Black: Acid damage resistance and a +1 bonus to Charisma checks to Persuasion.
  • Bronze: Resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing from nonmagical attacks and a +1 bonus to Charisma checks to Athletics.
  • Brass: Advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened and a +1 bonus to Charisma checks to Performance.
  • Copper: A +1 bonus to AC and a +1 bonus to Charisma checks to Stealth.
  • Gold: Advantage on saving throws against being poisoned and a +1 bonus to Charisma checks to Investigation.
  • Silver: Resistance to Necrotic damage and a +1 bonus to Charisma checks to Perception.

This allows for more strategic character building and customization, as the choice of ancestry is no longer simply about damage mitigation. It subtly influences roleplaying possibilities.

Enhanced Draconic Presence

At higher levels, the power of your draconic heritage becomes more pronounced.

Level 6: You gain the Draconic Breath feature. As an action, you can exhale devastating elemental energy. The damage type and range of this breath weapon is determined by your chosen Draconic Ancestry:

  • Red: Fire damage in a 15-foot cone.
  • Blue: Cold damage in a 15-foot cone.
  • Green: Poison damage in a 15-foot cone.
  • White: Lightning damage in a 15-foot cone.
  • Black: Acid damage in a 15-foot cone.
  • Bronze: Bludgeoning damage in a 15-foot cone.
  • Brass: A 15-foot cone of frightening energy (DC 13 Constitution saving throw; on a failed save, a creature is frightened for 1 minute).
  • Copper: You become invisible for 1 minute. You become visible if you attack or cast a spell.
  • Gold: You can heal yourself for 2d8 + your Charisma modifier.
  • Silver: You can target one creature within 30 feet that you can see with a ray of necrotic energy dealing 3d8 damage.

The damage dealt by your Draconic Breath increases as you level up (see below).

Level 14: Your Draconic Breath now deals double damage.

Level 18: Your Draconic Breath now deals triple damage.

Balancing Act

This homebrew aims for balance. The added benefits are offset by the removal of the original, simpler resistance mechanic at level 1. The increased versatility should encourage creative builds, while the powerful breath weapon provides significant combat utility at higher levels. Remember, this is a suggestion, and adjustments may be necessary based on your campaign's specific needs.

This revised Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer aims to offer a more engaging and flavorful experience for players, offering strategic depth and thematic consistency. It’s a breath of fresh air for a beloved subclass.
