Does Jegantha Count Sideboard

The question of whether Jegantha, the Wellspring counts cards in your sideboard has caused some confusion amongst Magic: The Gathering players. The answer, thankfully, is relatively straightforward.

Understanding Jegantha's Text

Jegantha's ability states: "If you control ten or more cards with different names, you have an additional two mana of each color." Crucially, the card doesn't specify where these cards must be located. It simply states "If you control ten or more cards with different names..."

Sideboard Cards and Control

The crucial distinction is between "controlling" a card and having a card "in your possession." You control cards in your hand, battlefield, and graveyard. You possess cards in your sideboard, but you do not control them until they are added to your hand or your deck. Therefore, cards in your sideboard are not considered when determining whether you meet the criteria for Jegantha's ability.

The Verdict: No

Jegantha, the Wellspring does not count cards in your sideboard. Only cards you control – those in your hand, battlefield, or graveyard – are factored into the calculation. To trigger Jegantha's effect, you need ten or more unique cards amongst these three zones. Having numerous unique cards in your sideboard will not influence whether Jegantha provides you with additional mana.

Strategic Implications

This understanding has significant strategic implications. Players utilizing Jegantha need to focus on maintaining a diverse hand and battlefield presence to consistently leverage the mana advantage this legendary creature provides. Relying on sideboard cards to meet the ten-card requirement is a flawed strategy. Careful deck construction and gameplay are crucial for maximizing Jegantha's potential.
