The question of whether Jegantha, the Wellspring counts cards in your sideboard has caused some confusion amongst Magic: The Gathering players. The answer, thankfully, is relatively straightforward.

Jegantha's ability states: "If you control ten or more cards with different names, you have an additional two mana of each color." Crucially, the card doesn't specify where these cards must be located. It simply states "If you control ten or more cards with different names..."

Sideboard Cards and Control

The crucial distinction is between "controlling" a card and having a card "in your possession." You control cards in your hand, battlefield, and graveyard. You possess cards in your sideboard, but you do not control them until they are added to your hand or your deck. Therefore, cards in your sideboard are not considered when determining whether you meet the criteria for Jegantha's ability.
